Charles Norris (1929 - 2013)

Photo by James Ennis Fishing Village Model Charles Norris was born in Halifax and lived in Lower Prospect, NS, a fishing village near Halifax. As a youth he often went to sea to fish. Later he worked building homes and boats with wood from local trees  He often painted alongside his older brother Joe who died in 1996. Each morning Charlie would cart and pose his little carved people in the boats and shacks of the roadside model of a fishing village he had created (click on photos for a larger view). His work is not generally well known, a small collection is owned by Cape Breton University, but Charlie carved and painted for his own enjoyment and to share his work with the public and his neighbors.
